Semantic barriers to communication refer to problems in decoding the message due to factors such as difficulty in interpretation, incorrect translations, or misuse of words. Some causes of semantic barriers:
- Badly expressed message: The term “badly expressed message” refers to confusing, ambiguous, or poorly worded communication that might lead to mistakes. Incorrect terminology, technical jargon, or imprecise ideas may generate this obstacle. To overcome this challenge, communicators should use succinct, straightforward language, provide examples or context, and accept criticism to clarify.
- Symbols with different meanings: Visual or nonverbal symbols can have many meanings and differ by culture. Gestures, expressions, and symbols without cultural, contextual, or personal meanings may cause hurdles. Multiple-meaning symbols can produce confusion, misunderstandings, and conflict. To ensure varied audiences understand and appreciate messages, communicators should use symbols judiciously, be mindful of cultural differences, and seek clarification when needed.
