- India is a sovereign state: India is completely independent, internally and externally. It is no longer subject to any foreign control and is free to take its own decisions. Even after joining the Commonwealth, India retains full sovereignty.
- India is a Socialist State: Added by the 42nd Amendment (1976), this feature reflects India’s commitment to justice, social, economic, and political. It aims to reduce inequality and eliminate exploitation through democratic planning and a state-regulated economy.
- India is a Secular State: Also added by the 42nd Amendment, this ensures complete freedom of religion. India does not have an official religion and treats all religions equally. There is no special status for any one religion.
- India is a democratic state: India is governed by the will of the people. The government is elected by universal adult suffrage and is accountable to the people. Citizens enjoy rights like voting, contesting elections, and freedom of expression.
- India is a republic: India has an elected head of state (president) who holds office for a fixed term. There is no hereditary ruler. It ensures political equality and public accountability.
