- The majority of Chennai's rainfall falls between October and December during the Northeast Monsoon (also known as the retreating monsoon).
- During this period, the winds shift direction and blow northeast, taking up moisture from the Bay of Bengal. This causes considerable rains in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
