The figure shows the construction of an electric DC generator.

Instead of a light bulb, an ammeter is displayed here.

Working: An external machine rotates the axle. Electromagnetic induction causes the generator's armature coil to produce an electric potential difference when it rotates in a magnetic field. This generates a current, as indicated by a galvanometer or the lightbulb's glow. The coil's sense of rotation determines the current's direction. 

One brush in a DC generator is always in contact with the coil's upward-moving arm, while the other brush is in contact with the coil's downward-moving arm within the magnetic field. As a result, the circuit's current always flows in the same direction as long as the coil rotates in the magnetic field.
