Every ship is supposed to have a log book, which is filled in every day by the captain. If he dies, the next senior officer fills it in (usually the First Mate).. Decide on appropriate dates (the mariner’s tale was supposed to be thought of as already very old when the poem was published: it should be no later than about 1700 AD; other clues to the date are the light-house and the mariner’s crossbow). If you wish you can make the log look old by staining the pages, by your handwriting and spelling. Write a series of entries for the log of the important events that take place in the ship as recorded in the poem. The first one has been done as an example 1701 AD Today we left the shore at 3.30 p.m. under glorious sailing conditions. We have 230 men on board. We are sailing with cargo towards Portugal. The journey is expected to take 90 days. We are well stocked with food and water to last us 250 days in case of any emergency. Hopefully we will not face any untoward happenings. God be with us! |
You could also do this as an oral activity, recording the entries on audio tape and using voice effects and other sound effects if you can.

1701 AD
December 12th: We have reached the southern icy seas. A thick, ominous fog has enveloped the ship, and the air is bitter with cold. A great white bird, the Albatross, appeared through the mist. It has been hovering about the masts, and the crew hails it as a sign of good fortune. The wind has picked up, and we are moving again.
December 15th: Disaster has struck. In a moment of senseless madness, the Ancient Mariner has shot the Albatross with his crossbow. The crew is outraged, as the bird brought the fair breeze that led us out of the ice. The air has turned heavy and silent. We fear a curse has been cast upon this vessel.
December 20th: The wind has died completely. We are becalmed in a wide, glassy ocean under a burning sun. Thirst is beginning to take hold, and the wood of the ship creaks in the stifling heat. The men stare at the Mariner with burning eyes; he wears the dead Albatross around his neck like a heavy, rotting burden.
January 5th: A ghostly ship has appeared on the horizon, sailing against the wind. It draws alongside, and we behold a spectre-woman and her mate, Death, casting dice for the lives of the crew. They have won the Mariner, while the rest of us have fallen prey to the spectral figure of Death. Two hundred men have dropped dead upon the deck. I am the only one left to record this horror.
January 25th: I have witnessed a miracle. The Mariner, cursed to watch the dead men’s eyes, finally felt pity for the slimy creatures of the deep. As he blessed them unaware, the Albatross fell from his neck and sank into the sea. Rain has finally fallen, and the ship moves by a spirit force. We are nearing home, but the Mariner is forever changed; he speaks of an eternal penance he must pay. God have mercy on his soul.
