Owner: Somaiya VidyaviharKeeping in mind the unique tradition of Somaiya Trust to pioneer courses that are emerging and cutting edge technologies, the Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (CRSGIS), was established in August 2004, as a self sustaining centre.
Remote Sensing Technology (RST) & Geographic Information System (GIS) are increasingly being used to monitor the natural resources, mining, telecommunications, Utilities, Ground water assessment, Linking of rivers, National agriculture Atlas, state/district level crop yield estimation etc., besides several ongoing national and state level projects. These applications form a direct input in preparing national policies. RS & GIS can also be used to monitor the effect of environmental management techniques in adhering to global norms.
From 2005-2010 CRSGIS was the Nodal Centre of the “INNOVATIVE PROGRAMME - Teaching & Research in Interdisciplinary & Emerging Areas” (XTH PLAN) of the UGC. The Centre successfully conducted the One Year Post Graduate Diploma in RST & GIS during the PLAN period, under the Umbrella of K.J.Somaiya College of Science and Commerce. Seventy Three students received their passing Certificates from the University of Mumbai.
From the academic year 2010-2011, the PGD (RST & GIS) course, is unaided. The Course is conducted under the Umbrella of K.J.Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, and affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Students will receive their passing Certificates from the University of Mumbai.
The interdisciplinary nature of the subject attracts students, teachers and researchers from varied disciplines. To cater to their needs, the Centre offers, Student Summer Projects, Internship, Training Programmes, Certificate and Diploma courses in RST & GIS.
