When epsilon (ε)-caprolactam is heated with water at high temperature it undergoes ring opening polymerization to give the polyamide polymer called nylon 6.

It is made by polymerizing the monomer caprolactum, which is derived from the petrochemical cyclohexane. The procedure is followed as follows.
Nylon-6 filaments are created by melt-spinning the polymer. A stream of air cools the fibers as molten polymer is pushed through a spinneret.
