The Fundamental Duties are moral obligations of all citizens of India, introduced by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1976 and listed in Article 51A of the Constitution. These duties serve as a constant reminder that while citizens enjoy rights, they also have responsibilities towards the nation.
There are 11 Fundamental Duties, which include:
- To abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag, and the National Anthem.
- To cherish and follow the noble ideals that inspired the freedom struggle.
- To uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
- To defend the country and render national service when called upon.
- To promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood among all people.
- To value and preserve the rich heritage of India’s culture.
- To protect and improve the natural environment.
- To develop scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry.
- To safeguard public property and abjure violence.
- To strive for excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity.
- To provide opportunities for education to children between 6 and 14 years (added by the 86th Amendment, 2002).
