उत्तर
- The Chipko Andolan Movement began in Uttarakhand, in the northern Himalayas. The term “chipko” means “to hug” or “to stick”. The term “embrace” in the movement’s name relates to how the people hug the trees, shielding them from the contractors' axes with their bodies. “Chipko Movement” became a common term to describe this.
- The grassroots Chipko movement was formed in response to the aspirations of the Uttarakhandi people. The Himalayan mountain range was becoming barren due to the quick and severe deforestation that was taking place. Furthermore, deforestation had already occurred due to the construction of factories, highways, and dams.
- The “Appiko” movement, which seeks to protect hill forests and verdant regions, swiftly spread throughout the hill nation, including Kamataka. The Chipko movement originally appeared in the Jodhpur district’s village of Khejarli in 1730 AD. A group of 363 Bishnois headed by Amrita Devi gave their lives to protect the community’s prized green Khejri trees by hugging them.
