उत्तर

In daily conversation, Western behavior is often narrowly associated with superficial choices like wearing European fashion, speaking English, or consuming fast food. Sociologically, however, Westernization refers to a much deeper structural transformation that involves adopting values like egalitarianism, scientific rationalism, and institutional frameworks introduced during colonial rule. Similarly, while common sense often conflates modern behavior simply with using the latest technology or electronic gadgets, sociology defines modernization through a change in mindset characterized by a commitment to merit over birth, a forward-looking attitude, and a rejection of fatalism in favor of human agency.

This difference between everyday understanding and scientific definition is equally stark when analyzing secular behavior. In popular media, secularism is frequently misunderstood as being entirely anti-religious or faithless in personal life. Sociologically, secular behavior means the progressive decline in the structural power of religious institutions over public life, leading individuals to make decisions in spheres like employment, politics, and science based on empirical reason rather than ritual taboos. Finally, Sanskritisation describes a process in which lower castes voluntarily change their food habits, rituals, and local customs to mimic those of dominant upper castes to claim higher social status, showing that what looks like a simple change in lifestyle is actually a complex, strategic negotiation of caste hierarchy.
