The causes of diabetes depend on its type:
- Type 1 diabetes: The body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, leaving little or no insulin.
- Pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes: Body cells become resistant to insulin, and the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance.
- Gestational diabetes: During pregnancy, placental hormones make cells more resistant to insulin. Sometimes the pancreas cannot produce enough extra insulin, so glucose stays in the blood.
