उत्तर

I visited a neighbouring village in Maharashtra to learn about the life of the people living there. I collected information about their population, crops, animals, occupations, land ownership and the Gram Panchayat.

Information about the Village:

  1. Population: About 2,500 people live in the village.
  2. Main Crops: The main crops grown in the village are wheat, jowar, bajra, sugarcane and vegetables.
  3. Animals Reared: People rear cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep and poultry. These animals provide milk, eggs and other useful products.
  4. Artisanal Groups: Some villagers work as carpenters, blacksmiths, potters and tailors. These workers provide useful services to the village.
  5. Women and Land Ownership: Some women own agricultural land. However, much of the agricultural land is still owned or registered in the names of male family members.
  6. Gram Panchayat: The Gram Panchayat looks after roads, drinking water, cleanliness, street lights, drainage and other development work in the village.

Comparison with the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries:

Basis Sixteenth-Seventeenth Centuries Present-Day Village
Agriculture Agriculture was the main occupation. Agriculture is still an important occupation.
Crops Food crops and cash crops were grown. Food crops, cash crops and vegetables are grown.
Irrigation Wells, tanks and other traditional methods were used. Wells, canals, pumps and modern irrigation methods are used.
Farming Farming mainly depended on human and animal labour. Tractors and other machines are now also used.
Animals Animals were important for farming and transport. Animals are still reared, mainly for milk and other products.
Artisans Carpenters, potters and blacksmiths were important parts of village life. These occupations still exist, but their importance has reduced in some places.
Women Women worked in agriculture but had limited control over land. Women have legal rights to own and inherit land.
Panchayat Village elders managed many local matters. The Gram Panchayat has elected representatives.

Changes:

  1. Modern machines and tractors are now used for farming.
  2. Villages have better roads, electricity, schools and transport.
  3. Modern methods of irrigation are used.
  4. The Gram Panchayat is now a democratically elected body.
  5. Women have greater legal rights over property and land.

Continuities:

  1. Agriculture continues to be an important occupation.
  2. People still rear animals such as cows, buffaloes and goats.
  3. Some traditional occupations, such as carpentry, pottery, and blacksmithing, still continue.
  4. The village community still works together to solve local problems.

Conclusion:

Village life has changed because of modern technology, education and development. However, agriculture, animal rearing and some traditional occupations continue to remain an important part of village life.
