The following are the features of directing:

1. Directing initiates action: One of the most important managerial tasks is directing. In addition to planning, organizing, staffing, and controlling, a manager must carry out this activity as part of his responsibilities within the company. While other roles lay the stage for action, directing starts the organization’s process.
2. Directing takes place at every level of management: The role of directing is carried out by all managers, from senior executives to supervisors. Anywhere there are superior-subordinate relationships, directing occurs.
3. Directing is a continuous process: The act of directing is ongoing. It occurs at every stage of the organization’s existence, regardless of who holds managerial roles. The guiding process continues even though companies like Infosys, Tata, BHEL, HLL, and their management may change, since organizational activities cannot proceed without direction.
4. Directing flows from top to bottom: Through the organizational hierarchy, directing starts at the top and works its way down. It indicates that each manager has the authority to provide instructions to their direct report and receive guidance from their immediate superior.
