The testes grow in the abdominal cavity near the kidneys and migrate to the scrotum shortly before or during birth. Sperm growth is optimum at temperatures slightly lower than 37°C, which is the usual body temperature. The scrotum lacks adipose insulation, keeping the testes at a lower temperature than the torso. The testes maintain a suitable temperature through involuntary movements of the muscles connecting the scrotum to the body wall.
