- Settlements vary in shape and size. It could be small and sparsely spaced and they may also be large and closely spaced.

- Subsequently with the development of the settlements, the size of the population also increases. This is known as the pattern less settlement.
- Patternless (or dispersed/irregular) settlements usually develop in hilly, forested, or remote regions where land availability, natural features, and personal needs influence the construction of houses.
- People build homes based on the availability of space, water, slope of land, occupation (like farming or cattle rearing) and personal preferences, rather than following a planned layout. Hence, the settlement lacks a regular pattern.
