1. Due to social needs, many people come together at particular place and construct houses in a particular way, which is known as settlement.
2. Settlements vary in shape and size. It could be small and sparsely spaced and they may also be large and closely spaced.
3. Because of some physical land forms or some man made features different type of settlements developed.
4. Subsequently with the development of the settlements, the size of the population also increases. This is known as the pattern less settlement.
5. Patternless (or dispersed/irregular) settlements usually develop in hilly, forested, or remote regions where land availability, natural features, and personal needs influence the construction of houses.
6. People build homes based on the availability of space, water, slope of land, occupation (like farming or cattle rearing) and personal preferences, rather than following a planned layout. Hence, the settlement lacks a regular pattern.
