1. To initiate action: Employees in the organisation start working only when they receive instructions and direction from their superiors. In the directing function, superiors guide employees’ actions towards the organization’s predetermined goals. If the directing function is executed successfully, then it results in the unit of direction and achievement of organizational goals.
2. To integrate employees’ efforts: In the organization, employees work at different levels and in different job positions. Employees may differ in their levels of authority and the types of jobs assigned. But all are interrelated, as they are part of one organisation. When employees work at different levels, their efforts are integrated, and they coordinate only through the directing function. While issuing instructions, the continuity of the work can be maintained.
3. Means of motivation: A directing function does not mean giving orders only; through direction and instruction, superiors try to motivate employees to perform to their best ability.
