- Hibernation is a state of dormancy during the winter, usually seen in cold-blooded (ectothermic) animals like frogs and some warm-blooded animals such as polar bears, to escape extreme cold. Animals show minimum physiological activity during hibernation.
- In contrast, aestivation is a state of inactivity used to survive summer conditions such as heat and dryness. Animals such as fish, snails, and frogs enter aestivation in cool, shady, and moist places. Some desert animals, such as ground squirrels, become torpid during hot parts of the day to avoid heat and desiccation.
