ii. Detergents have a strong cleansing action. ii. Soaps have relatively weak cleansing action.
iii. Oils or fats are not used in their manufacture, usually, petrochemicals are used to produce detergents. iii.  Vegetable oils or animal fats are used along with hydroxide of sodium or potassium to manufacture soaps.

Describe in brief the cleansing action of soap.

Why do soaps not form lather in hard water?

In a locality, hard water, required for an experiment, is not available. However, the following salts are available in the school laboratory:

1. Sodium sulphate

2. Calcium sulphate

3. Magnesium chloride

4. Sodium chloride

5. Calcium chloride

6. Potassium sulphate

Which of the above salts may be dissolved in water to obtain hard water for the experiment?

(A) 2, 3 and 5

(B) 1, 2 and 5

(C) 1, 2, 4 and 6

(D) 3 and 5 only

Which of the following sets of materials can be used for conducting a saponification reaction for the preparation of soap?

(a) Ca(OH)2 and neem oil

(b) NaOH and neem oil

(c) NaOH and mineral oil

(d) Ca(OH)2 and mineral oil

A student requires hard water for an experiment in his laboratory which is not available in the neighbouring area. In the laboratory there are some salts, which when dissolved in distilled water can convert it into hard water. Select from the following groups of salts, a group, each salt of which when dissolved in distilled water will make it hard.
(A) Sodium chloride, Potassium chloride
(B) Sodium sulphate, Potassium sulphate
(C) Sodium sulphate, Calcium sulphate
(D) Calcium sulphate, Calcium chloride

Describe the structure of a soap molecule with the help of a diagram.

Explain the cleansing action of soap. Draw diagrams to illustrate your answer.

In a soap micelle, the soap molecules are arranged radially with:
(a) ionic ends directed towards the centre and hydrocarbon ends directed outwards
(b) hydrocarbon ends directed towards the centre and ionic ends directed outwards
(c) both ionic ends and hydrocarbon ends directed toward the centre
(d) both hydrocarbon ends and ionic ends directed outwards
