उत्तर

For this project, I chose the Quit India Movement of 1942. I studied how national and local leaders understood the movement and how people in different regions participated in it.

Background of the Movement:

The Quit India Movement was launched by the Indian National Congress in August 1942. Mahatma Gandhi gave the famous call of “Do or Die” and asked the British to leave India. Soon after the movement began, many important national leaders were arrested. Because of this, local leaders, students, workers and ordinary people took responsibility for continuing the struggle.

Role of National Leaders:

  • Mahatma Gandhi wanted the movement to be based on mass participation and non-violence.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and other Congress leaders supported the demand for complete freedom from British rule.
  • The national leadership encouraged people to remain united and continue the struggle despite arrests and repression.

Role of Local Leaders:

  • After the arrest of major leaders, local leaders became very important.
  • They organised meetings, processions, strikes and protests in towns and villages.
  • Students and young activists helped spread messages and maintain contact between different groups.
  • In some places, local leaders encouraged people to boycott government institutions and challenge British authority.
  • Some underground leaders secretly printed pamphlets and passed information from one place to another.

The Local Leaders viewed the National Leadership as:

Local leaders generally respected Gandhi and the Congress leadership, but they also had to make decisions according to local conditions. They often understood the call for freedom in their own way. In some areas, people remained peaceful, while in others the movement became more confrontational because of arrests, police action and local anger. This shows that the national movement was not controlled only from the top. Local leaders and ordinary people also shaped the movement.

Importance of Letters and Speeches:

Letters and speeches help historians understand:

  • What leaders were thinking and planning.
  • How they reacted to British repression.
  • How national ideas were understood at the local level.
  • The differences between official Congress instructions and the actions of people in different regions.

Conclusion:

The Quit India Movement shows that the national movement depended on both national and local leadership. National leaders gave the main direction, but local leaders and ordinary people kept the movement alive after many senior leaders were arrested. Their letters, speeches and activities help us understand how the freedom struggle worked at the local level.
