Asthma results from a combination of environmental and genetic (inherited) factors. Common triggers include:
- Airborne allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mould spores, pet dander and cockroach waste
- Respiratory infections like the common cold
- Physical activity (exercise-induced asthma)
- Cold air
- Air pollutants and irritants such as smoke
- Certain medicines like beta blockers, aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen
- Strong emotions and stress
- Sulfites and preservatives in some foods and drinks
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
