  1. Background and Causes: After Independence, the Mizo Hills were made an autonomous district within Assam. Many Mizos felt they had never been part of British India and therefore did not belong to the Indian Union. The severe famine of 1959 and the government’s inadequate response to it led to widespread dissatisfaction and resentment.
  2. Formation of MNF: In reaction to these grievances, the Mizo National Front (MNF) was established under the leadership of Laldenga to demand independence. In 1966, the MNF began an armed uprising.
  3. Armed Conflict: The Mizo National Front, which received support from Pakistan and took refuge in East Pakistan, was met with strong action by the Indian government, including the deployment of the Air Force, causing severe suffering among civilians.
  4. Peace and Resolution: After prolonged conflict, negotiations started with the Rajiv Gandhi government. In 1986, the Mizoram Peace Accord was signed, granting full statehood and special powers to Mizoram. The MNF abandoned its demand for secession. This episode demonstrates that even deeply rooted separatist movements can be peacefully resolved through dialogue and negotiation.
