उत्तर

The Assam Movement (1979–1985) was influenced by concerns over cultural identity as well as economic underdevelopment.

  1. Cultural Identity: Many Assamese people felt their culture and identity were under threat due to the large inflow of Bengali-speaking migrants, especially from Bangladesh. This migration was believed to weaken Assamese cultural dominance, leading to demands for identifying and expelling all “foreigners.”
  2. Economic Concerns: Although Assam is rich in natural resources like tea, oil, and coal, the local population felt economically neglected, as these resources were exploited without improving their living conditions. The movement demanded better economic opportunities for indigenous Assamese people.
  3. Outcome of the Movement: Led by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), the agitation united people from different sections of Assamese society. It focused on the detection and deportation of illegal immigrants, and after six years of unrest, a settlement was reached. The movement highlighted the combined struggle to protect cultural identity and achieve economic justice.
