Introduction

In 1933, Norwegian economist Sir Ragnar Frisch, who later became the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics (1969), introduced the terms Microeconomics and Macroeconomics to provide a clear distinction between different scales of economic analysis. The terms derive from ancient Greek linguistics: 'Mikros' meaning "small" and 'Makros' meaning "large". This terminological innovation occurred during the Great Depression when economists recognised the need for systematic approaches to understand both individual economic behaviour and broader economic phenomena.
