- Apical meristem:
- Apical meristem is produced from promeristem and forms growing point of apices of root, shoot and their lateral branches.
- It is known as apical initials because it leads to an increase in the length of the plant body.
- The shoot apical meristem is terminal in position, whereas the root apical meristem is subterminal, meaning it is located behind the root cap.
- Intercalary meristem:
- The top or base area of the node contains intercalary meristematic tissue.
- Their activity is mainly seen in monocots.
- These are short-lived.
- Lateral meristem:
- It is present along the sides of central axis of organs
- It contributes to the growth of the stem or root's girth. Intrafascicular cambium, for example.
- It is found in gymnosperm and dicot angiosperm vascular bundles.
