Dadabhai Naoroji used the phrase “un-British rule in India” to point out that British rule in India did not follow the principles of fairness, justice, and good governance that Britain claimed to support. As a Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons in 1892, he believed that India was being economically exploited and that its wealth was being drained to Britain. He also criticised the lack of equal opportunities and political representation for Indians. Therefore, by “un-British rule,” Naoroji meant that the British were not practising the democratic and fair values they claimed to believe in when governing India.
