In the open circulatory system, blood flows in open spaces and bathes the cells directly. It does not flow in well-defined blood vessels. Examples-Arthropoda and Mollusca (except cuttlefish).
In the closed circulatory system, blood circulates inside the blood vessels without ever coming in direct contact with the body cells. Examples- Annelida and Chordata.
Blood is not present in the phyla Porifera, Coelenterata, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, and Aschelminthes.
