Continental (or extreme) climates mainly in the interior parts of large continents where the moderating influence of the oceans is weak typically in the mid‑latitudes (about 35°–55°) where temperate grasslands (steppes, prairies, pampas, velds, downs) occur and experience hot summers and very cold winters, and also in high‑latitude continental zones (the Siberian/taiga and tundra regions of northern Eurasia and North America) where winters are long and severe and summers are short and cool.
