- The wheatstone bridge is an important device used for the measurement of the resistance of a wire or of an electrolytic solution.
- It is made up of four arms with resistances R1, R2, R3, and X that are connected by a key K, a battery H, and a galvanometer G, as shown in the figure.
- Resistance R2 is variable, while resistance X is an unknown resistance whose value is to be measured. Resistances R1 and R3 are known.
- With the aid of key K, the circuit is completed, and the variable resistance R2 is then set so that a null point, that is, no galvanometer deflection, is reached.
