1. The wheatstone bridge is an important device used for the measurement of the resistance of a wire or of an electrolytic solution.
2. It is made up of four arms with resistances R₁, R₂, R₃, and X that are connected by a key K, a battery H, and a galvanometer G, as shown in the figure. 
3. Resistance R₂ is variable, while resistance X is an unknown resistance whose value is to be measured. Resistances R₁ and R₃ are known.
4. With the aid of key K, the circuit is completed, and the variable resistance R₂ is then set so that a null point, that is, no galvanometer deflection, is reached.
