What is the mechanism of a monsoon?

The monsoon is a seasonal wind system caused by the unequal heating of land and sea. In summer, land heats up faster than the oceans, creating low pressure over the land and high pressure over the sea. Moist winds from the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal move towards the land and bring heavy rainfall.

In winter, the land cools faster than the oceans, reversing the pressure conditions. Winds then blow from the land towards the sea. After crossing the Bay of Bengal, these winds collect moisture and bring rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and parts of Karnataka. This seasonal change in the direction of winds is called the monsoon mechanism.
