The dispersion of light is the phenomenon of splitting a beam of white light into its seven constituent colours (a spectrum, usually remembered as VIBGYOR) when it passes through a transparent refracting medium, such as a glass prism. This occurs because different colours of light travel at different speeds inside the refracting medium, causing each colour to bend (refract) at a slightly different angle and separate from the others.
