The method of representing a chemical reaction using the symbols and formulae of the substances involved is called a chemical equation.
Example: Zinc metal reacts with dilute sulphuric acid to form zinc sulphate and hydrogen gas. This equation is written as:
\[\ce{Zn_{(s)} + H2SO4_{(aq)} -> ZnSO4_{(aq)} + H2_{(g)}}\]
