उत्तर

A block and tackle system of pulleys consists of two blocks of pulleys, each block having one or more than one pulley. The upper block of pulleys is fixed to a rigid support and the lower block of pulleys is movable. The number of pulleys in the movable block is either equal to or one less than the number of pulleys in the fixed block.

A block and tackle system has V.R. = 5.

Draw a neat labeled diagram of a system indicating the direction of its load and effort

State whether the following statement is True or False.

A pulley changes the direction of force.

The mechanical advantage of an actual pulley is less than one. Give a reason. What is the justification for using the pulley then?

The diagram below shows an arrangement of three pulleys A, B, and C. The load is marked as L and the effort as E.

  1. Name the Pulleys A, B, and C.
  2. Mark in the diagram the directions of load (L), effort (E) and tension T1 and T2 in the two strings.
  3. How are the magnitudes of L and E related to the tension T1?
  4. Calculate the mechanical advantage and velocity ratio of the arrangement.
  5. What assumptions have you made in parts (c) and (d)?

A block and tackle pulley system has a velocity ratio 5. Draw a labelled diagram of this system.  In your diagram, indicate clearly the points of application and the directions of the load and effort.

What is the use of a fixed pulley?

Fig shown a block and tackles system of pulleys used to lift a load.

(i) How many strands of tackle are supporting the load?

(ii) Draw arrows to represent tension in each stand.

(iii) What is the mechanical advantage of the system?

(iv) When load is pulled up by a distance 1 m how far does the effort end move?

Draw a diagram of a single fixed pulley and obtain expressions for its:
(i) Mechanical advantage,
(ii) Velocity ratio, and
(iii) Efficiency, in the ideal case.

State one advantage of single movable pulley.

Meera chose to use a block and tackle system of '9' pulleys instead of a single movable pulley to lift a heavy load.

Why should she connect more number of pulleys in the upper fixed block?
