Let the number be x.
Then, thrice of this number = 3x and twice of this number = 2x.
If we decrease thrice of x by 5, we get (3x – 5)
According to the question,
(3x – 5) – (2x) = 1
⇒ 3x – 5 – 2x = 1
⇒ x – 5 = 1
⇒ x = 1 + 5 ...[Transposing (–5) to RHS]
⇒ x = 6
Hence, the required number is 6.
