उत्तर

The caste alone cannot determine election results in India because of the following reasons:

  1. No majority of one caste in a constituency: Women are harassed by their employers in the workplace. They are sexually assaulted at home. They are not safe on their trek at night. They are subjected to various forms of domestic violence, including beatings and harassment.
  2. No votes of one caste/community: No party receives the votes of every member of a caste or group. When people say that caste is a vote bank of one party, it usually means that a large proportion of the voters from that caste vote for that party.
  3. Candidates from the same caste: Many political parties may field candidates from the same caste if that caste is thought to dominate the electorate in a given constituency. All of these factors split the vote between two or more candidates. People from the same caste or community may have diverse interests based on their economic situation. Rich and poor, or men and women of the same caste, often vote in markedly different ways.

Our country’s ruling party and sitting members frequently lose elections. This could not have occurred if all castes and communities had frozen their political choices. Sometimes voters have a strong attachment to political parties that outweighs their attachment to their caste or community. Thus, it is possible to conclude that caste alone cannot predict election outcomes in India.
