उत्तर

Various functions that a machine can perform are:

  1. Changing the direction of applied force – Example: When a flag is hoisted with the help of a pulley.
  2. Changing the magnitude of applied force – Example: Bottle opener multiplies the applied force and much less effort is required to open the cap.
  3. Applying force at a convenient point – Example: In a pair of scissors, the input force is applied at the handle of the scissors which cuts the paper at the other end of the blade.
  4. Changing the speed of an object – Example: While riding a bicycle, force is applied on pedals which multiplies the speed.

  2. In the diagram, mark the direction of tension on each strand of string.
  3. What is the purpose of the pulley B?

The mechanical advantage of an ideal single movable pulley is ______.

Give a reason for the following:

In a single fixed pulley, the velocity ratio is always more than the mechanical advantage.

Draw the diagram of a single movable pulley and obtain its mechanical advantage, velocity ratio, and efficiency.

The pulley system shown in the figure is to be used to lift a load W. If the man applying the effort cannot apply a force exceeding 1000 N, what is the maximum load that can be lifted?
The actual load that the man is finally able to lift turns out to be 2700 N. What are the values of the actual M.A., obtained, and the efficiency of the actual set-up?

A block and tackle system of pulleys has a velocity ratio of 4.

  2. What is the value of the mechanical advantage of the given pulley system if it is an ideal pulley system?

A boy lifts a load of 40 kgf through a vertical height of 2m in 5s by using a single fixed pulley when he applies an effort of 48 kgf. Calculate:
(i) the mechanical advantage, and
(ii) the efficiency of the pulley. Why is the efficiency of the pulley is not 100%?
(iii) the energy gained by the load in 5s, and
(iv) the power developed by the boy in raising the load.
