When concentrated sulphuric acid is added to ethyl alcohol, it causes dehydration to give ethene. Ethene reacts with hydrozen in presence of Ni to give ethane.

\[\ce{C2H5OH ->[Conc.H2SO4][170°] CH2 = CH2 + H2O}\]

\[\ce{CH2 = CH2 + H2 ->[Ni][300°C] CH3 - CH3}\]
