State and explain the history of counselling.

Counselling developed gradually as a professional helping service. Its roots can be traced to guidance given by families, teachers, religious leaders and community elders. Modern counselling began to develop in the early twentieth century, especially with the growth of vocational guidance. Frank Parsons, often called the father of vocational guidance, played an important role in this development. Later, counselling expanded into educational, personal, social and psychological areas. Today, trained counsellors work in schools, colleges, hospitals, workplaces and counselling centres.
