Chemistry was never my strongest suit, and Mr. Khanna’s constant warnings about safety protocols always felt like unnecessary nagging. One afternoon, while the class was busy recording observations for a salt analysis, I decided to take a shortcut. Mr. Khanna had explicitly instructed us never to add water directly to a concentrated acid, explaining the violent exothermic reaction it could cause.
Thinking I knew better and wanting to finish my lab manual early, I ignored his voice echoing in the back of my mind. As soon as a few drops of water touched the test tube, a sharp hiss filled the air and a hot mist of acid spat out, narrowly missing my sleeve and singeing the wooden bench. My heart plummeted. Mr. Khanna was at my side in an instant, not with anger, but with a look of profound relief that I wasn’t hurt.
He didn’t scold me in front of the class; instead, he quietly showed me the charred mark on the table, a permanent reminder of what could have been my skin. I realised then that his rules weren’t meant to restrict my freedom, but to ensure my safety. The weight of my recklessness stayed with me long after the bell rang, he decided never to disobey his teacher.
