Before I could understand what had happened, the monkey jumped on my table and snatched the bananas from my hands. I sat frozen, my heart racing, as the brazen thief perched atop the balcony railing, peeling my breakfast with the practised ease of a gourmet chef.

I was vacationing in a small homestay nestled in the hills of Shimla. The morning had been serene until this uninvited guest arrived. The monkey took a deliberate bite, staring me straight in the eye as if challenging me to a duel. Emboldened by my silence, his companions began to emerge from the overhanging oak trees, their chattering filling the air like a disorganised choir.

“Hey! Those were mine!” I finally managed to yell, waving a plastic spoon. The monkey simply tossed the peel at my feet and let out a mocking screech before leaping onto the roof.

By the time the hotel manager arrived with a wooden stick to shoo them away, the “Banana Bandit” and his gang had vanished into the green canopy. I lost my breakfast that day, but I gained a valuable lesson: in the mountains, the monkeys always have the final say.
