- Travelling (Walking): Dribbling is a fundamental and widely used skill in basketball. Once a player stops dribbling, one foot becomes the pivot foot. The player must keep this foot planted and cannot lift or move it. Doing so results in a violation called travelling.
- Double Dribble: By rule, a player can dribble only once before needing to pass or shoot in basketball. If the player stops dribbling, they must either pass to a teammate or take a shot. Starting to dribble again after stopping is called double dribbling.
- Three Seconds: Offensive players cannot remain in the free throw lane for over three seconds. If they leave the lane or the ball touches the rim, the three-second count resets.
- Ten Seconds: The offensive team must move the ball past half court within 10 seconds. If they take longer, they lose possession.
- Over & Back: After the offensive team crosses half court with the ball, they are not allowed to take it back into their own half. Doing so is called over-and-back.
- Carrying/Palming: Carrying or palming is similar to a double dribble. Players aren’t allowed to place their palm under the ball or hold it in one hand for too long while dribbling. It’s like stopping and restarting the dribble.
- Lane Violation: During a free throw, players stand along both sides of the lane. Entering the lane too early is called a lane violation. If an offensive player commits it, a successful free throw won’t count. If a defensive player does it, a missed shot doesn’t count, and the shooter gets another attempt.
- Kicking: Players cannot deliberately kick the ball. If a defender does so, the offensive team is awarded possession from the sideline.
- Goal Trending: Goaltending occurs when a player interferes with a shot while it is above the rim and on its way to the basket, or when the ball touches the net or rim while being shot. If goal tending is called on the defence, the shot is considered good. If the goaltender is on offence, the shot does not count and the defence receives the ball.
- Out of Bounds: A ball is considered out of bounds if it reaches the ground outside the court lines. Lines themselves are also considered out of bounds. The ball is considered out of bounds if it comes into contact with any portion of a player’s body that touches the ground.
