The poet has deliberately spelt “amalgam” as “amalgum” to show the speaker’s ignorance and careless attitude towards dental care. The incorrect spelling also adds humour to the poem and makes it sound like the way an ordinary person might speak. It shows that the speaker is not very knowledgeable about dental treatment.
