Madhubani Painting

  1. Name and physical characteristics: The art form I have chosen is Madhubani painting. It is a traditional folk painting made with bright colours and detailed patterns. The paintings usually contain figures of people, animals, birds, flowers and scenes from nature. The figures are often outlined with dark lines and decorated with intricate designs.
  2. Materials used: Madhubani paintings are traditionally made using natural colours, handmade paper, cloth or walls. Brushes, twigs and bamboo sticks may be used for drawing and colouring.
  3. Region and traditional use: Madhubani painting belongs mainly to the Mithila region of Bihar. Traditionally, women painted these designs on walls and floors of their homes during festivals, weddings and other special occasions.
  4. Origin and evolution: The art has been passed down through generations of artists in the Mithila region. Earlier, it was mainly used for decorating homes and for ceremonial purposes. Today, Madhubani paintings are also made on paper, cloth, canvas and other objects and are sold as artworks and handicrafts.
