In this sculptural representation, the Kushana king is portrayed as a colossal, majestic, and powerful authority figure, intentionally utilising visual art to project a larger-than-life, divine status. The king is shown standing firmly in a rigid, heroic posture, dressed in a heavy, long tunic (or overcoat) and thick, elaborate military boots, which reflect the Central Asian nomadic heritage of the Kushanas. He is depicted holding a massive sword or mace resting on the ground, structurally symbolising supreme military strength, absolute justice, and imperial power. Even though the statue’s head is missing, the sheer physical scale, the fine drapery lines of his royal attire, and his authoritative stance are designed to inspire awe among his subjects. By commissioning such colossal statues and installing them in sacred shrines, the king was portrayed not just as an ordinary earthly ruler, but as a divine agent of God (often adopting titles like Devaputra, meaning “Son of God”) to legitimise his absolute political rule.
