By the late 19^th century Indians deliberately rewrote and popularised the past portraying an ancient “golden age,” recovering folk traditions and sacred/architectural achievements, and circulating images and histories through print to counter British portrayals of Indians as backward and to create pride, shared symbols and a sense of common destiny.
