There are two high and two low tides in a day.

1. The rotation of the Earth results in every meridian coming into the position of two high tides and two low tides very nearly every 24 hours.
2. Because the Earth rotates through two tidal “bulges” every lunar day, coastal areas experience two high and two low tides every 24 hours and 52 minutes. High tides occur 12 hours and 26 minutes apart.
