उत्तर

The relationship between wealth and welfare can be explained as follows:

1. Wealth as a Means for Welfare: Wealth serves as a means to promote human welfare.

The consumption of goods such as food, clothing and shelter, which constitute wealth, enhances human well-being.

Thus, wealth is instrumental in supporting welfare.

2. Conditional Relationship: However, an increase in wealth does not always translate to increased welfare.

Welfare depends on how wealth is produced.

For instance, if wealth is generated under unhealthy or exploitative conditions e.g., long working hours, unsafe jobs, unsanitary environments, it can harm welfare rather than improve it.

3. Distribution of Wealth: Welfare also depends on the distribution of wealth in society.

Unequal distribution can mean that a large portion of the population remains in poverty and lacks basic needs, which limits overall social welfare.

Conversely, more equitable distribution of wealth tends to maximize welfare.

4. Type of Wealth Produced: Not all wealth contributes to welfare equally.

Wealth generated for defense goods like weapons, tanks, missiles may increase national income but does not necessarily promote economic welfare.

5. Economic Assumptions: Despite the above nuances, economists commonly assume that an increase in wealth generally leads to an increase in welfare and a decrease in wealth leads to a reduction in welfare.

This assumption holds because the positive effects typically outweigh the negative side effects such as social tensions resulting from inequality.
