1. The earliest recorded organised athletics events were held at the Ancient Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece. In 776 B.C., the only event was the stadion footrace.
2. The ancient pentathlon later combined the stadion footrace, long jump, discus throw, javelin throw and wrestling.
3. Track and field competitions developed in Europe, and the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), the first national athletics body, was established in England in 1880.
4. The modern Olympic Games, beginning in 1896, gave athletics a prominent international platform. The International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was established in 1912 as the international governing body.
5. In India, the Amateur Athletics Federation of India (AAFI) was established in 1946. Indian athletics later developed from grass tracks to modern synthetic tracks.
