उत्तर
A pond is a shallow, aquatic ecosystem in which living organisms interact with one another and with the physical environment.
Abiotic components: water, dissolved inorganic and organic substances, gases, nutrients and the nutrient-rich soil or sediment at the bottom; sunlight, temperature and seasonal changes also influence its functioning.
Biotic components:
(1) Producers - phytoplankton, algae, and floating, submerged and marginal aquatic plants.
(2) Consumers - zooplankton, free-swimming animals and bottom-dwelling animals, including herbivores and carnivores.
(3) Decomposers - especially bacteria and fungi, with other microorganisms, which are abundant in bottom sediments.
Solar energy supports photosynthesis; consumers feed on producers and other consumers; and decomposers break down dead matter, releasing nutrients for reuse by producers. Energy flows one way through the pond, while nutrients are recycled.
